CURRICULUM RESOURCES
Catalogs, kits, packages, vendors, guides, publishers, used curriculum

This list of free resources for 3 & 4 years olds (some Kindergarten overlap) includes both secular and religious content, so you have choice. Almost everything is free. There are many more resources online, but this is a good start for you if you are developing your own curriculum, or an adjunct to one you’re using now. We suggest that you also review the links for K and first grade because there is a lot of overlap.  Also, children learn at their own rate. If you see something that you believe is a timely topic for your child and it’s listed in another grade level, certainly dig deeper to explore it! That’s one of the joys of homeschooling; it is out of the box, unique and individualized instruction. Let it work for you.

On the CHN Legal Requirements page, you can read about the legal aspect of homeschooling in CT. For your convenience, here it can be stated that if your child has never been enrolled in public school, you simply proceed to homeschool. You do not opt out of a system that you’ve never opted in to. If your child is already enrolled in public Pre-K or K, then you will need to file a Letter of Withdrawal to homeschool. We have a sample letter on this page. If you are planning to send your child to public school Kindergarten, and you are waiting a year so they will begin at age 6 instead of age 5, you need to appear in person at the school and file an “opt out form”. The form simply shows that you intend to send your child to public school one year later than is typical. This does NOT apply to homeschoolers, because you do not opt out of a system you were never enrolled in, nor planned to enroll in.

There are many philosophies about how to instruct a child that is in K or Pre-K. If you are planning to homeschool, you should consider doing some research on what it means to have such a young child at home. What are your goals and priorities? They will never have a chance to re-live these tender years, so most homeschool parents see the value in preserving and prioritizing the importance of play and socialization for such young children. Academics do not need to be format at this age. Learning is quite natural and simply if you just let it unfold and guide your child as they express their interest in the natural progression of learning the basics. Trust your child to teach that to you! Below are resources for you to consider when deciding what will work best for your particular child. This list is just a beginning. The breadth of options available can be overwhelming, so this is a good stepping stone to begin with.

MATH

Math Standards from K-12 This is a one-stop website for all grades to see what the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics grade level recommendations are. It’s beautifully, succinctly and efficiently stated.

There are individual tabs for the grade level expectaions for Numbers, Operations and Computations. You can teach your child all of these via the free resources listed below. Or, in the case of older children who don’t need as much direct guidance, you can utilize many free resources to accomplish the goals. Below are links to free resources for teaching/learning math at all levels.  Understanding Number Sense and Operations “Number sense essentially refers to a student’s “fluidity and flexibility with numbers,” (Gersten & Chard, 2001). He/She has sense of what numbers mean, understands their relationship to one another, is able to perform mental math, understands symbolic representations, and can use those numbers in real world situations.”

An Effective Guide to K-3 Mathematics a free 342 page instructional ebook.

Common Core State Standards – Math These are *standards* – goals for the average kindergarten student to reach. They’re a baseline, but not a curriculum. You, as a parent-teacher, can use these printable goals to plan the curriculum you want to achieve instructing these topics with your Kindergarten student. How you go about doing that, as a homeschooler, gives you the flexibility of choice that you want.

YouTube for Kindergarten Math When you google search “Kindergarten Math YouTube” you will have visual lessons pop up, giving you many choices for lessons to do with your child. There are almost 3 million videos for you to choose from. They are, of course, listed at the top by popularity.

Teaching Channel Includes almost 1,200 videos on academic topics – just use the search function for topic/grade. You do have to register here. https://www.teachingchannel.org/videos?default=1

Geometry and Spatial Sense – Children build on their knowledge of basic shapes to identify more complex 2-D and 3-D shapes by drawing and sorting. They then learn to reason spatially, read maps, visualize objects in space, and use geometric modeling to solve problems. Eventually children will be able to use coordinate geometry to specify locations, give direct

Measurement – Learning how to measure and compare involves concepts of length, weight, temperature, capacity and money. Telling the time and using money links to an understanding of the number system and represents an important life skill.

Data Analysis and Probability – As children collect information about the world around them, they will find it useful to display and represent their knowledge. Using charts, tables, graphs will help them learn to share and organize data.

Algebra – The ability to sort and order objects or numbers and recognizing and building on simple patterns are examples of ways children begin to experience algebra. This elementary math concept sets the groundwork for working with algebraic variables as a child’s math experience grows.

The following resources can be used from K-2, depending on the child. Primarily, they are 1st grade level.

Reading & Book Lists
Charlotte Mason reading lists employ a journal technique in which the children either use copy work or write a summary of the story. From K-2 they use picture journals and draw an image of the book and write 1-2 sentences for oldest kids one might transitioned to a regular composition note book and write a summary.

 Math

You can use Khan academy and supplement with games and manipulatives. If a child struggles with a section you can find more on that math concept, to master it, before moving on.

Science

You can incorporate field trips and hands on activities to learn through real life experience.

Handwriting

You can also used alternate handwriting techniques like writing in sand, letters with clay, copy work, tracing, letters with puffy paint, glitter glue etc.

 Unit studies

Sunflower unit study

This says pre-K but I did this with older kids and just dug deeper. We incorporated math/science/art/history/reading into a week long project.

Advice, Opinions and Facts About Homeschoolers and College

1. Whether a 2 or 4 year college/university, each one has their own admissions criteria.

2. I suggest that you (meaning your child/parents) decide which route you want to go; 2 year or 4 year school, to start.

3. Once you have decided where to begin, contact several colleges and ask them for their homeschool admissions criteria. Of course, write everything down when you talk to them on the phone or in person.

4. As for needing a high school diploma, that, too, will depend on the college’s criteria.

5. If you want/need a high school diploma, you can simply print one out and it “counts” since the parent determines when graduation occurs. Some colleges offer a blank copy that you can fill out online for free (you can ask if they do). Or, you can use this link or a similar one that you search for: high school diploma

6. What some colleges like as admissions criteria is a portfolio (with or without a diploma). Here is a link to give you an idea of how to compose a homeschool portfolio for college admission: http://www.mariannesunderland.com/2013/01/how-to-build-a-college-portfolio-for-your-homeschooled-highschooler/ and also and this and finally, this /.

7. It is common for parents to worry, at least a little, about their teen getting accepted into college/university, when they’ve been homeschooled. Why? Because we love our kids and want the best for them. If the teen wants to go to college, we, as parents, want to feel confident that they will gain admission. For parents who haven’t yet experienced their homeschooled child getting accepted into a college, please trust those who have gone before you. I don’t know of one single child who has been denied college admission! Quite the contrary; colleges are known to have open arms welcoming homeschooled children. Why?

8. While it is common for public/privately schooled high schooled teens to experience external pressures to “go to college to be a success”, it is not common for homeschooled children. Homeschool parents know that a successful college experience will only come from a student who WANTS to be a college student; the attitude in which they will want to maximize their academic experience in a field they have a passion for. Why else would one go to college?

Advice for making the transition from high school to college as smooth as possible for a homeschooled student is simple; plan well in advance and keep your documentation organized. That said, there are plenty of homeschoolers who have gained college admissions without doing portfolios, SAT’s, GED’s, or similar testing. Community colleges typically have very flexible admission criteria; they may want a parent-created diploma (print it out online), and a basic math and English placement test. The test is not for grading purposes, but simply to see what courses are most appropriate for any new student whether they are age 13 or 53.

Whatever path you choose to take; no college, delayed college, community college or starting at the university level – homeschoolers have a long time, proven track record of successfully attending and graduating from colleges across America. Relax, do your college admissions ‘homework’, and enjoy the ride! The road has been paved by thousands of homeschool college graduates who have gone before you, and you will continue to pave it for those who will come after you. Make it a memorable, positive experience!

Teen Science Cafe is a series of free, fun, out-of-school events where teens get to socialize over food and refreshments and have the opportunity to talk with local scientists and engineers about current cutting-edge ideas in science and technology, all in a relaxed and informal (out-of-school) setting.  Teen Science Cafés are for teens, by teens. A core group of Teen Leaders, with the committed mentorship of an adult, plan and run the café themselves. They make welcome as diverse of a teen crowd as possible—diverse in ethnicity, culture, gender, and motivations for learning about science. Teen Science Cafés are not just for the science geeks; they are for all curious teens. Along the way, teen organizers gain a host of leadership skills. Cafés are typically 1-1.5 hours, once per each month during the school year, with an additional Teen Leader planning meeting before each café.
