PART 2: How to Calculate GPA (Step by Step)

Step 1: Assign Grade Points

Use this standard unweighted GPA scale:

Letter Grade Grade Points
A 4.0
B 3.0
C 2.0
D 1.0
F 0.0

Step 2: Multiply Grade Points × Credits

Example:

Course Grade Grade Points Credit Quality Points
English 9 A 4.0 1.0 4.0
Algebra I B 3.0 1.0 3.0
Biology A 4.0 1.0 4.0
PE A 4.0 0.5 2.0

Total Quality Points: 13.0
Total Credits: 3.5

Step 3: Divide

GPA = Total Quality Points ÷ Total Credits

13.0 ÷ 3.5 = 3.71 GPA

Weighted GPA (Optional)

If you choose to weight advanced courses:

Course Level Add
Honors +0.5
AP / Dual Enrollment +1.0

Example:

  • Honors Biology A = 4.5

  • AP English A = 5.0

➡️ Many homeschool families list both weighted and unweighted GPAs, or only unweighted unless a college requests otherwise.
