Rebuttal to Scientific American’s Anti-Homeschool Claims

Scientific American’s article: Federal  Government Should Regulate Homeschooling

Breitbart’s rebuttal

6/18/2024
Scientific American Magazine Calls for Federal Homeschooling Regulations

Excerpt: “nearly three quarters, 73 percent, said they homeschool because they have a dissatisfaction with the academic instruction at other schools. To further demonstrate that point, the U.S. Department of Education’s National Assessment of Educational Progress testing found that just 32 percent of fourth graders…”, and, “…there are myriad videos showing teachers bragging about indoctrinating children in the classroom…”, and, “…there has been controversy nationwide about what some describe as “pornographic” books in schools…”

and aside from the very polarizing viewpoints on the above issues, they cite the outcomes – the statistics clearly show that America’s children are being FAILED.  The system is collapsing.  Parents have had more than enough and are making lifestyle changes so they can withdraw their kids from school, or simply not send them in the first place.  The response?  Point a Blame Finger at the homeschool community.  No.  It’s not us. It’s a systemic failure, and some think it is by design.  Parental rights are, and have been, under attack.  Politics have risen to the top of many school districts, and are embedded from K-12 across the subjects, in curricula.  It’s not working – the data that they are tracking clearly shows our kids have been dumbed down, indoctrinated into adult agendas, and – even the kids have had enough.  Homeschoolers are seeing older kids tell their parents they want out.  The parents contact homeschool advocates and want to know how to do homeschooling high school independently.  What has shifted from, “How can I teach my child to read?” in the lower grades has morphed into, “My teen refuses to go to school anymore and is asking to be homeschooled. Help.”Now, it’s the teens who can’t read – and we must ask, “Why??”

Article: The Kids Can’t Read

Excerpt: “Essentially, a majority of children in the American public school system aren’t performing at proficient reading levels when tested. Further, 18% of US adults are illiterate and 52% do not reach a basic level of literacy considered necessary to function in society.”

Legislators need these facts. They need to be aware of how grim it is and to understand that the parents are making significant life changes to withdraw their children and homeschool them so they do get a quality education.  Homeschoolers have academically outpaced public schoolers for a long time. “Eyes” don’t need to be on the homeschoolers; they need to be on the failing public schools who are responsible for their students and are educationally neglecting to even graduate them from 12th grade with basic proficiencies in far too many cases.  The parents know it. The kids know it. And, they’ve had enough.

Scientific American on Homeschools Need to be Regulated by Feds
Excerpt: “The newsletter called for “some basic federal mandates,” including that parents “undergo a background check — the same as K-12 teachers.” The editors also called for homeschool parents to submit documentation to authorities that proves “children are learning.””
What about the failed background check system in the public schools now? Not only can almost anyone become a teacher, at least 15% of them have abuse/neglect allegations against them; a nationwide problem with much being written about it. Do they care about the children?  Why are there so many cover-ups of adults harming students while in school?  Parents and the public, want to know.
