Some common interests and opportunities for tweens/teens in the middle school years, include the following: increased interest in a social life of their own, beyond park days that moms set up. They frequently enjoy dances and proms in the homeschool community.  Of course, they have their own circle of friends for personal social time. Additional opportunities may include volunteer work, joining
civic organizations, homeschool tween/teen groups, homeschool co-ops, sports: archery, fencing, ice skating, roller skating, teen social meet-ups, skiing, etc.

This is also a good age (and so is high school) to maximize real life learning; visiting museums, exploring mentorship programs, doing volunteer work.  Another adjunct to a curriculum (and also for unschoolers), is the conscious use of TV as an educational supplement. There are quality documentaries, history and science programs, animal care and vet programs, etc., on Netflix or cable tv.
